We may or may not ever be able to make an announcement that "we're pregnant"...but we have come to understand that the blessing is the fact that however parenthood happens, it is a miracle! ....... Now we have been home with our precious blessing from Russia since August 2007. Join us on our fun and crazy ride that we call "life with this child of mine."

Hello from Moscow!
We made it! And I have to tell you, my child was a trooper. He did SO well on the flight; I was both surprised and totally impressed with him. We were able to keep him up until the flight left, which was an hour & a half past his normal naptime. After the flight took off, he slept for about an hour & a half. We had just eaten lunch when he woke up. He stayed awake the entire rest of the trip, playing with us and with his toys…he was exhausted, but just couldn’t fall asleep. Of course, Murphy’s Law kicked in, and for the last 7 minutes of the flight, he finally gave up and slept.

The only thing I’m a little disappointed about is that Aeroflot didn’t do anything for children, in terms of food. They didn’t even offer food, which I thought was interesting. Fortunately, we had brought some snack food & juices…and then Little I ate from our plates for our ‘second lunch.’ Oh well…all’s well that ends well. We made it, and that’s the most important thing.

When we got to the airport, we were both so exhausted that we weren’t paying attention, and walked right past the baggage claim and out the security checkpoint into the main part of the airport. In our defense, walking “right past” the baggage claim area was fairly easy because it was down a hallway…and we were in “follow the herd” mode at that point. I guess the people we were following happened to not have any checked baggage. After wandering aimlessly around the airport (which is not big at all) for a few minutes, trying to find an information desk – or anyone to help us – Nathan left me & Iliya with our carryons, and he went to see if they would just let him back past the security checkpoint to claim our luggage. And they did. So, all’s well that ends well!

It took us at least an hour to get to our hotel, but we are in a very nice Holiday Inn…We plan to get out & do some stuff while we're here. We've been told that if the traffic is right, we’re about 10 minutes from Red Square. If it is not right, then we could be over an hour from Red Square. Welcome to Moscow!

I've got some cute pictures, but I'll have to post them tomorrow...I don't think I can stay coherent enough to work this computer for much longer, even.

In other news (before I close), I am figuring out what really sets Little I off. It is food, and that’s about it. The other stuff that sets him off is pretty easy to handle. For instance, we know he’s eager for a bath and we do what we can to get him in there before too much whining ensues & leads to a meltdown. But food. It takes time to prepare. It takes time to heat up. It takes time to cool if it is too hot. This child even gets very frustrated if we don’t give him his medicine fast enough. This, I am not quite sure how to handle. Because, if I can help him understand that if he can be patient for 3 minutes, then all will be fine. But it’s not that easy. I guess we’ll just all have to live through it, till he learns that when we get ready for a meal or snack (or medicine, even!), he can trust us to give it to him. He is not going to go hungry. I may not know what to feed him all the time, but he won't ever go without food. It just may take a bit longer than he would want it to, to help him understand this.

Anyway, I just put him down for bed…it took about 2 minutes for him to fall asleep. And boy, do I hope he sleeps all the way through the night. Because I am headed for the shower & the bed.

It’s been a long day.

But we’re almost home.

Glad to hear you made it to Moscow and pray that things work smoothly there for you.

I wonder if you would be able to see Robin and Sean?? They should be to Moscow soon with T! That would be neat.

Great to hear our Little Man did ok on the flight. But I can't say that I'm surprised. He just keeps on proving what a good child he is, and how much he belongs with you two! Can't wait to see all of you on Tuesday!!!!!
Love, Nana & Papa

"Ro-ro's" -- that may be the answer to Little I's impatience once you are back home & can get some -- as a matter of fact, I'll bring some (Cheerios) Tuesday if you want. They're not too filling to interfere with meals & probably good enough for him that he can get some vitamins from them. I wouldn't start Fruit Loops or cereals of that kind, before meals tho' b/c that can interfere if they are too sweet & he decides he'd rather eat that instead.

hugs, mom

Glad to hear Little I did well on the flights. We've never traveled internationally with our little man, but never in our domestic travels has a US airline offered us a choice of food or snacks for kids. My advise, pack up on the goodies for the long flight home.

Melissa that totally sounds like Oleg when we got him. Usually I had to distract him will Elle went and made dinner. If he knew that food was being prepared, he would stand in the kitchen and whine and scream until it was ready. This got much better after we got home. Give it time, there is hope yet ;) Safe travels.

I like Captain Smartypants' response... with time it should get better. You will learn his schedule, he will learn to trust you.
We went through the same thing with Nikita the first summer we hosted him... he then realized that food was always available and learned that we wanted him to eat. The second year he was with us his older brother came with him. It was interesting to see Nikita teaching his brother that it IS okay... they WANT us to eat! Skinny Stas never did learn that he needed to stock up for the cold winter months. He is so polite that he did not want to offend us.

ANYWAYS... with time, it will be okay! Once you guys learn the trust, then don't let it go to long, cause then you will have a hard time of re-teaching him.

I imagine in the Children's Home Little I may not have seen the food being prepared. He was probably eating just as soon as he saw it. It will be fine, like everything, it just takes time.

I'll check on that Holiday Inn. Or, our agency said they can arrange an apartment for probably less than a hotel (so they say). We're busy making travel plans!

Start singing songs, girlfriend. It is the ONLY way to distract my little ones when I can't get the food on the table IMMEDIATELY! I am glad to hear that things are going well and just can't wait to see pictures of your happy little family!!!

I'm so glad your trip went well as you traveled to Moscow! It sounds like Little Iliya is doing very well and that you already know his little personality so well! Enjoy your time in Moscow as a family!

Have an excellent stay and Moscow. We will pray that your flight home is as good or better than the flight you just had!

Congrats!

The impatience gets better! Owen was the same way for about 2 weeks and then realized he was going to get what he needed. It helped once we got home too that Jim could keep him away from the kitchen while I got food ready for meals. I carry him too now when I'm making his food during the day and tell him about what I'm doing to hold his attention. It is helping that he is understanding "wait" and "hold on" and "hands down" too now.

It will get better!
