Happy 20 Months, Little Guy!
Today, my son turns 20 months old. We met him for the first time when he had just turned 15 months old. You know what just struck me as really sad? I have no clue what time he was born. I know that really doesn't matter, in the great scheme of things, but sometimes the smallest thing will impact me and make me sad. I'm sure I'll get used to it...because there are other things I know...like, what time we met for the first time, and what time he became "forever ours." So I guess I won't sweat the small stuff.

He wins the hearts of almost anyone that meets him... he is VERY shy with people he doesn't know (which, actually, is a GOOD thing!) but really quite irresistable. And yeah, I know, I'm biased...but he's awfully cute. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't make a comment about his size. He is definitely a chunk - and his size is a great conversation starter. For those of you that worried, he fits perfectly into his 18-month clothing. I'm sure he'll do some growing once he gets home - but he's not doing too shabby, even right now!

Okay...about speedoman. Shame on me...the ONE time I did not have my camera with me, this is what I encounter. BUT, the good news is that some of our friends, here, DID have their camera. And they are going to email me a picture of the guy. It's really almost too funny to be true!

And Dede had a good question: What happens after the 10 days is over? Basically, there are a couple days of processing. Since the court documents have not been signed yet, we have to wait till the 10 days is officially up before they will be signed. After that, we can get his passport, visa (i think), and all of his paperwork. This process takes a couple days. Then we will fly to Moscow (a lot of families with other agencies are able to use a courier service - who makes a run to Moscow for them, but we won't be doing that.) We'll spend a couple days in Moscow, doing US Embassy immigration paperwork. I think this process takes 2 days, now (used to be just 1)...and since it just happens that the first day is on a Friday, we'll have to hang out Saturday & Sunday so that we can finish up on Monday. Then we are supposed to fly out Tuesday (Aug. 7).

So that was the long answer...but no, once our 10 days is up, we don't fly home immediately. Instead, we have almost a week left in-country.

A few things since yesterday:

  • We've noticed that Little I has the most interesting tan line. Pretty much every inch of him is soft & white...except for his hands! They are quite brown! I guess it's a result of all the layering & long sleeves...and then taking walks outside. So he has very tan hands. Which leads us to believe that his skin will tan pretty easily. Not fair.

  • His tantrums now include slapping me in the face. It is really irritating -- not to mention it hurts! -- but when he does it, I try to take his hand, kiss it, and then lay it softly on my cheek. This usually gets his attention. Sometimes, when I let go, he'll slap me again, and sometimes he won't...I guess it depends on how upset he is. In these moments, it takes extra effort, on my part, to remember that he is frustrated and his hands may be his main outlet for this frustration.

  • We moved back into our regular room. It's not as nice as being in the suite, because we don't have as much room...but it's a cool room with a bed & food, just down the hall. So I won't complain.

  • Can you over yogurtize a kid? This one LOVES yogurt like nobody's business. We try to limit the amount he eats...but I think he would eat it at every meal, if we would let him.

  • New next-to-favorite: The slide! Mommy takes him to the top and daddy catches him at the bottom. It's not a very big slide, but he loves it. When we go outside, he beelines it to the swings. And after that, we go to the slide. I know one thing: I can tell we are going to have to invest in a swingset...and soon!

That's all for now...we're halfway through our 10 days!! Only 5 more to go!

Thanks for answering the 10 day question. I think a courier trip from Moscow to Vlad would be a little tough. Sounds like your making good use of the time and bonding together which should make the journey home smoother. Looking forward to those speedo pics! ;-)

water, yogurt, and hiccup/burps

Owen and Iliya have so much in common! Owen loves to drink water out of a glass and hold it in his mouth, usually dribbling it back out onto his shirt, the floor, wherever. He gets hiccup/burps too! I didn't know what he was doing the first time I heard it, but Jim said he'd seen someone do that before--I thought it was too funny!! Owen also LOVES LOVES LOVES yogurt. He would eat it all day too. I give it to him for a morning snack, sometimes after lunch, an afternoon snack, and sometimes after dinner! Can you give them too much? I don't know, but he definitely loves it!

I also have to give water to Owen to get him to swallow his food sometimes. He's not used to chewing so much and I think he just quits or forgets he has food in his mouth. The water washes it right down!

Happy 20 month birthday to Iliya! Owen's is the 6th of August, not far behind.

Oh, I almost forgot--the tantrums. We too have tantrums at our house, usually consisting of Owen arching his back and falling to the floor. He hasn't hit us yet, but the pinching has started when he gets really mad. Fun times, yeah?

We have so much to share with each other and work through together as we parent these little boys, don't we?!

I hope you enjoy the next few days in Vlad. You'll be home before you know it, and it will all seem a lot like a dream.

:) Adrienne

PS WE SAW SPEEDO TOO!!!! Aaaah! I can't believe I forgot about him! WE got a real kick out of him too. Tennis in a Speedo?

We also saw a lady strip down to her undies to change clothes on the tennis court....a bit much for us!

Our 2 year old lives on yogurt so I think you are safe! :o) And when I say lives on it, I mean it! He drinks the drinkable kind (watered down with milk), the kind in the tubes, and cups of it, too. My Dr said it's great for regulating their digestive system. And hey, he'll have strong bones!!! hehe

Oh my God, I get slapped in the face too...and my son's hands are 5 shades darker than the rest of him!

I think you're pretty safe with the yogurt! Natalie's thing has always been milk - even to this day. It's good for them, so keep it coming.

Remember Nat's tantrums? She would scream, fall on the floor and then bite herself on the arm really hard. They outgrow it, so don't sweat it. You know as well as I that consistency is the key. You guys are doing great!

We can hardly wait to see you! It's less than two weeks, now. WOO HOO! The countdown is on!
Love you, Kristy

yogurt is a staple in our house. I buy the Yo-baby stuff for Oleg and he normally likes it. Right now he's poo-pooing it, but somehow is on a Kefir kick. Almost a year after being home and I try Kefir again, go figure he loves the stuff.

Loved the new pics! Can't say that our family is too shy on enjoying meals :o) ...we'll make sure that we have yogurt stocked when you get to come for a visit -- just let me know what flavor.

About the face slapping -- it may be that when you kiss his hand & lay it softly on your cheek & then he repeats the slapping, you may need to try it another way. When he slaps, then you can firmly, yet gently, hold his hand & sternly, say "no" & have a disapproving look, especially in your eyes, and then after a moment or 2, take his hand & lay it gently on your cheek & say "love mommy" & smile sweetly. If you immediately kiss his hand, that could give positive reinforcement for the behavior, but if you delay the positive action for a couple of moments, then he can connect with the positive with the positive & the negative with the negative, if that makes sense. Little ones don't remember those early days, but moms & dads do, and that worked for us for all 4 of our children (although you don't remember it :o) & others we've looked after. He's been in a caring envrironment, so that shouldn't be upsetting to him like it might be if a child has not been cared for. I can remember at worship time, I could just look at you all (when you got old enough to recognize "the look") and you would make an adjustment to whatever it was that you were doing. Like Kristy said, consistency is the key -- if you say you're going to do it, then you must, or otherwise, control just flies out the window. Any more advice??? just ask :o)

Love you all, so much!

Oh lord I remember the face slapping! haha! It'll pass, you just find your way of dealing with it...you'll find what works for ya'll. Oh and the yogurt, let the child eat all he wants! haha! Vinny use to be the same way, but it seems he's lost interest in it lately, so I bought him so of those Danimals yogurt drinks, he seems to like those. Anyhow, just wanted to stop in and say hi! Can't wait to see "Speedo man" hahaha!!
Love, Bethney

mamalin & gramps had a great suggestion for the slapping I think. That is how I handled it with my girls except I said 'gentle' instead of 'love mama'. It came in handy when they were being too rough with animals too. I was curious what the blood draw thing is about. We are next up I think and now you have ME nervous.

:) thank you so much for the pictures. Dan said Ilya was sad b/c Dima was getting all his vittles. I told him they weren't in the same baby home and that Ilya was with you already so he was jsut joking. Our little guy is also roundish and loves to eat!

Glad to hear that your at the halfway point. Although it seems far away, you will be home before you know it and be able to share Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas this year as a family. Cherish your time in Russia and I look forward to seeing more pictures soon!

Happy 20 months to Little Iliya! It is so exciting to hear how things are going with him each day! It is great to learn about different things to expect once we finally get our child (foods, tantrums, likes, dislikes, etc.) Thanks for sharing!

Happy 20 months Iliya. We too had to deal with hitting however it didn't last very long. It seemed as soon as we left Russia it stopped.

Glad to hear his is a chunk! Max is 31 months and in 12 and 18 month clothes. We do our best trying to fatten him up with yogart!
