Happy Day, Little I!
Since it's not his birthday, I can't really say Happy Birthday, but if you didn't know...today, Little I turned 19 months old. So Happy Day to him! I wish him health and warmth and happiness until we can return to see him.

It is so hard for me to believe that so much time has passed. It has been 15 weeks, exactly, since we first laid eyes on our little man...and almost 15 weeks since we saw him last. The time has gone SO SLOWLY, yet so quickly! Fortunately, I've had time to get my 2 biggest - & most important - work projects of the year completed. Now things are going to slow down a little bit & I'll be able to get caught up so that things can continue to go smoothly while I'm gone from work.

I know this comes as a shock to you - but I've even started to think about our packing list for Trip Two. I can feel us getting closer & closer...yet until we hear something definite, we still seem so far away.

My friends, Adrienne & Jim, finally have custody of their new little guy, Owen.

One of Adrienne's most recent posts was about changing Owen's clothes...feeding him...giving him a bottle...giving him a bath...putting him down to sleep... all for the first time. Reading about her experiences sparked something in me. And to my surprise, it was not excitement. Now, don't get me wrong - I am so very excited about Little I. But the emotion that her blogpost evoked in me was fear...or better yet, apprehension.

I'm sure all expecting parents feel unsure, so I'm sure it's normal for me to feel this way.

But I certainly didn't really expect to be afraid.

The closer we get to Little I, the more apprehensive I am that I won't know what to do with him when he's ours 100% of the time. I'm terrified that I won't know what/how/when to feed him...or how to give him a bath! Or when/how to put him down for bed and/or a nap. I've done my fair share of feeding, bathing, and putting down...other peoples' children...but you know, we have waited so long to have our own to do these things with... And as I've read Adrienne's (and others') experiences, it really hits home with me that we truly are about to have a child. It's one thing to be temporarily responsible for someone else's child...but to know that we are about to be totally, 100% responsible for this little soul... I'm feeling unsure of myself!

If you've been reading this blog for any length of time... Remember how, on the day we met Little I, I felt like everything I knew about children just flew out the window? I literally felt helpless, even if it was only for a day. That's the way I'm starting to feel - like I won't know what to do. Like everything I know will be gone again.

I think part of it is that life with a child has been a reality only in my imagination, for the past 8+ years. Now that being parents is becoming a true reality for us - I'm having a hard time feeling like we'll be just fine outside of our life as I've imagined it over the years. That may not make sense...but in other words, translating what we've wanted for so long - into what we are actually about to have - has been an interesting process for my brain.

But on the brightside...

Although I say these things about fear and apprehension, in my heart, I know that I will be fine. I know that Nathan will be there, and we'll be starting this parenting thing together. We will not be perfect, and won't always know exactly what to do. But we will learn and survive, and be better for surviving. I will not be alone - in any sense of the word - I will have my husband, your prayers, and I'm sure a few angels watching over me.

And in no time at all, I'm sure that the apprehension will turn into competence...and all will be fine. I'm just ready to get started on that transition.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

But...while we wait... Happy Day, to my precious boy. We love you.

You really do have the bests posts. You say some many things that most of us are thinking/have thought at one time or another and are such a good writer. I'm in the same boat as you - just afraid of not being able to fulfill every need or parenting, for the first time, and being faced with attachment issues, etc... I'm with you, 100%, and know that regardless we WILL be great parents and we WILL give these kids something they might never have been able to experience - a very special life. Little I is so blessed to have you and I can't wait to read about the day you have him and your mommy instincts kick in. :-) Happy Day to Little I!

Every parent goes through exactly what you are feeling right now. I still say it and I've been a parent for 10 months now. Derek threw me onto the plane kicking and screaming, "I don't know what to feed it!" He told me the first thing is to stop calling him "it."

Essentially what you do is make it up as you go along. That is the best you can do. There is no users manual, no definitive guide to tell you what you should be doing. You will do fine.

HAH!!!lol...I've been a mother for almost 12 years and I'm still winging it!!! I promise the fears and apprehensions you have are perfectly normal...and all soon to be mommys have the same fears you are having whether they grow their children in their belly or in their heart! I remember a post you had at the very beginning where it gave the different stages of adoption vs. the stages of pregnancy. I think what you are going through is the nesting stage...you know your time to meet your little one is very soon. Just go ahead and give yourself permission to be a little crazy and unorganized for the first 3 months...then you want have so much pressure or expectations on yourself! After 3 months, it will still be crazy...but hopefully it will be an organized crazy...and the best time of your life!!! As far as not knowing what to do with him, feed him, etc...just listen to your Womans Intuition! Always trust your gut feeling with your child...it's never let me down!!! Love you and call me anytime!!!

Love,
Andrea

I agree with the above posts...you have to remember parenting doesn't come with an instruction manual...but we learn to parent from our parents...and your mom & dad did a GREAT job with you kids! I learned a great deal from her myself...

I remember the night I went into labor with Jake--who did I call? Your mom! She told me I needed to go to the hospital--NOW...but I was SCARED TO DEATH! I had the same apprehensions--it doesn't matter how you become parents--you have those fears. So just go with the flow--and believe it or not--you will know exactly what to do! If not...CALL YOUR MOM! *lol*

Love you--ALL 3 of you!

Melissa,

I agree with the other comments. We all go through a period of anticipation and nervousness when we bring a little child home. Although I've had plenty of practice with our son, I'm still nervous with my friends babies as I'm not sure exactly how they hold them or how they entertain them. Like Andrea said, you wing it. It gets easier with time and before you know it you're a pro yourself. You will learn your child and he you, so you will be a perfect fit.

I am so looking forward to hearing the good news. Your trip to pick up little I is closer each day.

Many blessings,

Carey

Oh Issy! I remember the first days when I was alone with Natalie, after the grandparents had gone home and Patrick went back to work. Patrick would come in and find Natalie in a bouncer or swing blissfully playing or sleeping...and me standing at the sink, washing dishes and sobbing like it was the end of the world.

The fact that "every mother goes through it" probably doesn't comfort you THAT much, but it is true and you WILL be fine. Your instincts WILL kick in. You and Nathan and Little Man WILL all learn each other. I have no doubt that the little sweetheart will have us all trained like he wants us in no time flat!!

And for those nights when you don't know what to do and your at the end of your rope, you know that I'm a phone call and five minutes away!

I sure do love you and am looking forward to seeing you guys on Saturday!! Love, Kristy

p.s. I agree about your writing! Maybe we should collaborate on some children's books. I'm thinking of working on some Biblical children's books and a VBS curriculum this coming year. Wouldn't our names look GOOD together IN PRINT??!!

All I can say is, me, too. Every once in a while I get hit with a great big, "What am I DOING?". I know it's right. I know it's what I want. I know it's what I'm meant to do. I'm just not always sure...what forever is like.

You will be great when the time comes (hopefully VERY soon). I always worry about the same thing and I was talking with a co-worker the other day who said when they told her she could leave the hospital she thought the doctors were insane to let her go. She didn't know what to do. But actually we all know what to do-- We love them and then you make it through. Always remember you were meant to be together!!

I had that fear too. Our first 24 hours with the kids were the hardest of my life! It is seriously scary, all of a sudden being responsible for someone else's well being. For the first few weeks, my husband and I also would get that "What did we DO?" feeling every once in a while. Like maybe we made a mistake in choosing to be parents.

But you know what? It all kind of comes together despite your fears. You learn to parent as you go, and I bet you will be surprised just how good your natural instincts are!

I was watching Sesame Street with Michael this evening, and Gina was leaving for Guatemala to adopt a baby. She was telling all the Muppets about it and showing his picture, and I got all emotional thinking about y'all.

Hang in there! You will get to hold little I very soon, I know it! Thanks so much for commenting on my blog. BTW, you were not bothersome asking about my "love fern"--I'm glad someone was interested! Please let me know when you get your court date!

God Bless!

Hey, Miss,
I read your blog - about Little I's day - and how you're looking to the day you celebrate with him - and then started reading Adrienne and Jim's blog - and I'm guessing your experience will be similar since they adopted from the same region -and she gives so much good advice by just telling their experiences- it was just so exciting and I kept putting you and Nathan in their place - and thinking how wonderful it will be to read your experiences - and as I read on another's blog - when people ask how long - we can say "you're one day closer" each day. Love you three, Sis

Sorry-I just had to re-post this due to a typo! :)

Melissa,
I've been keeping up with your blog since hearing about you all from the Flemings. As we wait for our referral, I have many of the same fears you expressed. Everyone says that "it (being a mom) just comes naturally and you will know what to do," but I feel very nervous about it, too. Thanks for putting your thoughts in your blog and letting all of us that are going to be "first time" parents know that we are not alone! Happy 19 months to your son!

Melissa, this post brought back so many memories for me. But at least you are thinking about this and preparing for it now. I remember when we adopted Chipmunk that we had been so busy planning for court, packing, etc. that we never really even considered the fact that we would have an actual baby placed in our arms. I know that sounds silly but it didn't really cross our minds - we were too wrapped up in the big picture to even think about the smaller details. You should have seen the looks on our faces when we brought Chipmunk back to our hotel after picking him up from the baby house. We looked completely clueless and I swear we spent an hour just saying back and forth to each other, "We have a baby. They just handed us a baby and left us on our own. What the heck do we do now?" It seems funny looking back on it but we were a little terrified at the time. Thank goodness Chipmunk was sooo easy-going and let us work up our confidence. Anyway, you are absolutely not alone in this and you will make great parents!

Okay, I know everything's a little stressful, but I got this down for you.

1.) You stick the kid in a sink, lather 'im up real good and wash him with a washcloth (and water). Drip dry for best results. Towel dry hard to reach places that may cause chafing.

2.) Feed him Devil Cremes, popcorn, chicken fingers, and most importantly: peanut butter jelly sandwiches. Often. And a lot of milk. And how? You know that little thing that opens and closes below his nose? It may have teeth in it (sharp little ivory lookin things). It's the little hole that he screams out of. It's called "a mouth". Okay, pay attention...all you gotta do is: put. The food. In his mouth. That's it! It's that easy.

3.) That lady has a kid named Chipmunk?

4.) Nap time is easy. You put him down in his bed. And tell him to go to sleep........whenever you want to. But not too late. Cause you'll end up stayin up all night with him. Around noon sounds good to me. A nice, even 12. Like your birthday. That's easy to remember.

If you ever need any more advice, call me. I still exist. And tell your husband that too. :) Love you guys! And seriously, I am soo so happy about the news today!!! Congratulations so much!
