We may or may not ever be able to make an announcement that "we're pregnant"...but we have come to understand that the blessing is the fact that however parenthood happens, it is a miracle! ....... Now we have been home with our precious blessing from Russia since August 2007. Join us on our fun and crazy ride that we call "life with this child of mine."

Overheard in the Car
As I've previously mentioned on this blog, we have every intention of Iliya growing up with his adoption story simply being a part of him.  The last thing we want to do is hide anything from him...but at the same time, we make sure that the information he receives is developmentally appropriate.  I created a book that Iliya likes to look at, and he LOVES to watch his "Baby Iliya" videos (which are actually from both our trips to Russia).  

Although I don't think he has a true concept of "Russia" being his birthplace, he can tell you that he was born in Russia.  I've read that 3 year olds develop a curiosity about the whole idea of pregnancy and who actually gave birth to them (and their friends, siblings, etc)...but so far, that hasn't been a real question of his.  I imagine it won't be too much longer, though.

Having said all that, it's clear that the wheels in his head are definitely turning.  Nathan informed me of a conversation Iliya initiated this afternoon, on the way home from school.  The child has entertaining logic!

Iliya: (completely out of the blue)  I want to go to Russia (to) see Baby Iliya

Nathan:  Well, we have to get in an airplane to go to Russia.

Iliya:  Where's (the) airplane?

Nathan:  The airplane? It is at the airport.

Iliya:  I wanna go to (the) airport.

Nathan:  We have to save up our money so we can get on an airplane to Russia - that plane ride costs a lot of money.

Iliya:  (considering) Well.........I will ride (in) helicopter

Well, when he watches the videos, he seems to have the understanding that the baby on the screen is him (I've asked him and he has started saying "me!"). So I wonder if he is just asking to go to the place where the videos were filmed (due to his developmental need for the concrete) or if he really would like to see baby Iliya in the flesh and just doesn't grasp the fact that time travel isn't possible (maybe both?). So yeah, it was an interesting request.

He could have requested a ride on the Polar Express -- that probably would've taken him close to Russia enroute to the North Pole :o) Grandad & I quote Iliya like you used to quote "Bambi"......."All-l-l-l aboard!...Well..comin'?"

Yeah. We have a tape recording of me telling my parents I don't want to talk to the recorder. I want to wait "unitl my friends get here"--the friends being the tapes I usually listened to and sang along with! That made me think of Ilya wanting to go and visit his video self.

Oh, those wheels...

Maybe I'll try the helicopter option!

I remember when my nephew was about his age and he saw twins for the first time. He looked at me and his mother and said "Look Mommy one for you and one for Aunt Joy!"
