An "On the Go" Weekend
Isn't one supposed to be rested & rejuvenated by the time Monday rolls around? I used to think that, but I guess the joke's on me. I tell you, I need a weekend after our weekends are usually gone! I will apologize in advance, that this post is quick & a bit disjointed - but that's what an "on the go" weekend does to me. It leaves me practically brain dead & incoherent.

Anyway, it was a very busy weekend. We had a great time, seeing a ton of different people (my sister, my friend Ginger, N's parents, Becky & Keith - pictured there to the left - our first blogger IRL meeting - we had a great time!!). And on top of seeing everyone, Nathan was gone during the daytimes, because he is doing is 2-week Guard drill and that entails working weekends, too. Iliya really enjoyed seeing the ton of different people, but this morning, he was realllly cranky. Yesterday, he didn't get a good nap, and I wondered what was up with that. This morning, he was a really ill pill...which put me in an ill mood (oh wait, I was already there, thanks to hormones)...and when the two of us are ill, it just doesn't make for a pretty picture.

This morning, we walked into church, and he immediately began whining and fussing. I thought I was going to have to leave and run start an ebay listing. But right before church began, I realized that, not only was my poor child dealing with a mom in a bad mood, but he was also probably suffering from the after-effects of overstimulation. I decided right then that I needed to calm down and be more patient with him. We made it through church with minimal fussing, which was great. And instead of going out to eat after church, I opted to take him home, feed him lunch, and lay him straight down for a nap. (which turned out to be a verrry good decision)

Right after his nap (from which I had to wake him close to the 2-hour mark), we headed to Birmingham. On her way back home, my sister dropped me & Iliya off at the Guard base to pick up Nathan. From the Guard base, we were headed to another location in B'ham to speak at an info meeting for our agency - we just gave the highlights of our adoption experience & answered questions (but not before getting lost, trying to GET to the meeting).

After the meeting, we crossed paths with N's folks & grabbed a quick bite with them (it's N's mom's birthday -- Happy Birthday!) and then we were on our way home.

Iliya got a bath & was in bed, asleep by 7:50. Bless his heart, we are just so busy. There are people who don't care about routines and then those who are very strict with their routines. We are somewhere in the middle. Since Iliya's being seems to revolve around food, we are very strict with that part of the routine - but we are also flexible, in that we carry fruit, yogurt, and other snacks with us. So if we are on the go during snacktime, he is taken care of. He also requires a good amount of sleep...so we tend to be a bit less flexible about his sleeping schedule. We don't mind having company during nap/bed times...as long as the company doesn't mind the fact that we have to pause & disappear for a bath & wind down time...however long that takes.

Anyway, I always said I wouldn't be a mom "on the go." But I guess it seems that today's society almost demands that you do just that...go! I hope that we can slow down a bit & make our family - just the three of us - a priority. Spend a day or two, every now & again, just our new little family, hanging out, with no plans. It's fun to lay in bed on a Saturday morning, put the little one in bed with us, and slowly come to life (some people love to watch their children sleep; my favorite is watching my child wake up - he's always so happy right after he's had good sleep). Then lay in bed, acting goofy till the little one informs us that it is time to eat breakfast. Then the rest of the day, do whatever...because we made no plans to begin with!

Yeah...we really need make carving out that time together a priority. Because the time is coming when the little one will not be so little anymore. He will be making his own plans...sleeping over with friends or thinking it's much cooler to hang with his girlfriend, than his parents.

We should cherish this time we have now, while he's still completely, 100% ours.

What a gawwwwgeous picture! Thank you again for your fabulous hospitality! You guys were as sweet IRL as you are online! :-) Iliya is the cutest and I am sure having people around overstimulated him. Keith still gets a giggle over his "cry/smile". :-) You guys have done such a GREAT job with him - you should be so proud of yourselves and of how far your son has come! His sign language is amazing. Anyhow, I could go on and on. If you're ever in the Atlanta area, we'd love to have you here!

yes...make that time a priority! before you know it you will be applying to college...applying for housing and thinking that his christmas gifts this year should be something he can use while in college a good 4 hours away!!! yep...that's what we're in the process of doing now...he'll be grown in the blink of an eye...I wonder sometimes where the time went...and I'd like to take a moment and say.....

GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!! and i would be remiss if i didn't pass on jake's "mississippi state is coming after 'bama and going for a sweep of the state" lol

You "done good" by taking him home instead of out for lunch after church. As a nanny and child care provider for many children over the years I have ALWAYS insisted that children rest and eat....they will do anything for you if they are rested and not hungry. (my husband keeps that rule with me too! as I type this at 2:10 am!)

carve out the time...it does nothing but go faster over the years! I can't believe how much faster time goes now at 40 than just 10 years ago at 30.

Yeah, I can comment today - sometimes it's off limits - it's good to hear the realizations of parenthood - we're so glad all is working out so well. I was just asking Mamaw last night why Nathan was at drill so much - I thought he only had to go once a month - so I got my answer.
love Tatya Sis - and thanks, Iliya. We love you......
